Women at greater risk from sugary drinks

Women increase their risk of developing heart disease and diabetes when they drink two or more sugar sweetened drinks per day. A new study has shown the risks from sweetened drinks and flavored waters may be independent from weight gain issues. A study of middle aged women who drank two or more sugary beverages a day were more than four times likely to have high levels of dangerous blood fats called triglycerides and impaired blood sugar levels known as prediabetes. Also women who drank these beverages had more belly fat but not necessarily more weight. Belly fat or abdominal obesity poses a greater risk than fat in other areas of the body as it lies deep inside and produces hormones and other substances that negatively affect blood pressure, cholesterol and insulin production. Together these risks create a metabolic syndrome, a cluster of risk factors link to heart disease, diabetes and stroke.

Social Security Disability update

Starting today, July 28, 2011 the Social Security Administration (SSA) will not allow subsequent disability claims to be filed if you currently have a claim pending at the Appeals Council (AC) [SSR 11-1p]. This means that if you are denied by an Administrative Law Judge (ALJ) and you appeal to the Appeals Council (AC) you cannot start a second claim until the AC makes a final decision. Anyone prior to July 28th who has started a second claim will not be affected.
